Hey everybody! Hope you’re all having a good one. This week’s review is going to be on Call Me By Your Name, by André Aciman. I read this one almost exactly two years ago and the sequel, Find Me, recently. (I’m planning on writing a review for Find Me soon, so stay tuned!) These books are absolutely amazing, so I thought it’d be a great idea to share my thoughts about it here.
The novel is about gifted 17-year-old Elio Perlman who falls in love with Oliver, a doctoral student who comes to stay with Elio’s family in Bordighera, Italy over a beautiful Summer during the 1980s. The romance that blossoms between the two alters their lives forever and the following events that take place create an incredibly profound experience neither ever forgets.
I remember the very first time I tried to put into words how well I felt this work was written. I’ve never come across an author who includes this many nuanced expressions and speak so much truth into them, whether it be the subtlest physical withdraws from one another or even Oliver’s abrupt greetings and farewells. Aciman is the only person I know who incorporates an insane amount of detail in his writing, but also just the right amount of ambiguity throughout certain areas, both in which have initiated powerful conversations regarding the meanings amongst readers/fans.
What additionally stood out, I personally thought, is how articulate the characters are. I found their superior intelligence extremely intimidating and unique. I don’t know if that’s just me! Its a significant aspect that helps drive the plot and I found myself in constant awe as I progressed through the book.
Call Me By Your Name was also made into a successful film, starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer – Chalamet being the youngest person in nearly 80 years to be nominated in the “Best Actor in a Leading Role” category by the Academy for his performance in this movie. It won the 2018 Oscar for “Best Adapted Screenplay.”
I kid you not, this is a fictional love story for the ages. If you’re just looking for a great romance novel, Call Me By Your Name is the next one to read.
