Process Post #3: Branding

Last week, Suzanne had a guest speaker, Mauve Pagé, come in for an informative presentation discussing branding techniques and how to integrate the core values of your brand into an effective logo/image. She included meaningful quotes, such as one from Howard Schultz, Starbucks’ CEO, where he mentions how “a great brand” ultimately “adds a greater sense of purpose to the experience.” Page also provided examples, where we examined important design choices. One significant takeaway I got was how, if letters are a part of your logo, condensing and boldened are two key features to keep in mind. Less is more when undertaking the design process or making critical decisions pertaining to imaging.

Following Pagé’s lecture, the class took part in a group activity that required creating a logo for PUB 201. I distinctly remember her giving us this activity in PUB 101 and thought it was a fun exercise, (though it was an individual task) The first step incorporated creating a web and listing the main features of the course and the terms/meanings associated. “Business,” “Online presence,” and “Marketing” were some to name a few. Afterwards, we decided on the font, then the colours. A classmate actually suggested the fact that since PUB 201 is taught in downtown Vancouver, it could be an aspect assimilated into the logo, possibly adding blue to indicate the campus is located near a body of water. Overall, I really enjoyed collaborating with my peers and essentially generating a visual representation of a learning process we are all going through together.

Reflecting on the concepts elaborated on during lecture, Four Purple Walls does not necessarily possess a true “logo” per se, but I believe the image and font do clearly represent what the blog is about. I might consider changing it, but for now, I am content with the way it appears.
