For this week’s “Process Post” I will be peer-reviewing Erica Apacible’s blog “Moods & Mixtapes” (http://moodsandmixtapes.com/) First and foremost, I love the theme that she chose. It definitely suits the subject of her website, possessing a very interesting aesthetic with soft colours as well as fonts that are easy to read. The images she has selected for the various moods so far distinctly represent them. I like how each one initially appears as being contained in a rectangular-shaped box, then (of course) needs to be clicked on in order to read the entries in their entirety.
Regarding the content, her “Process Posts” are neatly structured with subheadings to organize what she discusses and includes additional visuals, which were a pleasant surprise. There are no grammatical or spelling errors and her writing is concise. What really stood out to me is a point she makes in “Process Post #3,” saying “I don’t want someone to come across my new online home,” only to make the assumption that it “was made solely for schooling.” She has a good approach to creating content and this is an excellent reminder- to put on a different writing hat when it comes to wording/formatting text in a way where it is not just strictly academically oriented, but also remember it fundamentally encompasses explanations on our own creative experiences, which is what I need to strive for when working on the weekly assigned “Process Posts.” Erica shows an excellent ability to balance the two inherent aspects on her blogsite.
She clearly articulates her online self as it showcases an established voice with precisely expressed knowledge of an individual interest. In this case, by generating unique playlists/suggesting what fitting songs to listen to when in certain moods/feeling certain emotions. Overall, Moods & Mixtapes is a great example of Chittenden’s (2010) take on “identity” in the “blogosphere” that, as these concepts are central to what the course is about, encourages us students to “try out a different expression of identity” and “engage with the broader social world.”
The only issue I would say is the fact that I personally find the “Moods & Mixtapes” typeface size on the homepage (although nice to look at,) slightly too large and the tagline is quite small. (I am unsure as to whether or not this specific feature is adjustable) Since all the posts appear there, it can seem a bit overwhelming, particularly because they have a floating appearance and do not align. However, I completely understand these are intrinsic features of the theme. I reiterate that this is my opinion; others may differ. However, I overall thoroughly enjoyed browsing through Erica’s new website and believe she consistently produces quality work, both from a design and content perspective.
